Slowing Down

One of last weekend’s goals was to slow down. It turns out, I’m not very good at slowing down. I always want to be doing something. Even if I’m watching Netflix, I don’t sit down and watch it. I choose shows I’ve watched a hundred times so I can be writing, or cooking, or tidying up. I rarely just sit down and take a break. I used to be very good at it.

For Christmas, my parents bought rooms at the Mineral Spa in Moose Jaw for the family. This was a wonderful gift for many reasons. It was a weekend away. It was a weekend spent with family. It was at a place with a spa pool. (The spa pool FORCES you to slow down.) Anthony was surrounded by people who love him. He had so much fun.

On the road.

Side note, our dog, Drogo, was also spoiled all weekend. We were lucky enough to have a friend offer to take him for the weekend, and he was treated like family. He’s a BIG dog so I am very grateful to have a friend offer to hang out with him.

My friend sent me this photo of Drogo. He was perfectly happy being spoiled by a slightly calmer toddler than my own.

Growing up, Moose Jaw was one of my favourite places. It wasn’t the city itself, but the people who lived there. Moose Jaw is where my dad grew up, and it was where my grandma and my aunt lived. I loved going up to see them. If we were lucky, family would come from Regina as well, and we’d have great times. My grandma was my favourite person. There isn’t much else I can say about it. She made me happy. I was lucky to have her in my life. My aunt was also one of my favourites. She was loving, encouraging, and outspoken. She and my grandma were strong. They were the strongest. I only wish I had more time with them, and I really wish I could introduce my son to them.

Moose Jaw is harder to visit now. I’m always glad to to see it again though.

While in Moose Jaw this time, another aunt (and another of my favourites) came to stay the weekend with us. It was a lot of fun having so many of us together. (The whole crew included my parents, my sister, my aunt, my partner, my kiddo, and me.)

The weather was freezing. We didn’t get a lot of chances to go outside and explore. I love downtown Moose Jaw. I love the stores, the coffee shops, and the touristy stuff. We skipped a lot of that. If anybody does go to Moose Jaw, you should check out Prairie Bee Meadery. Clint, Anthony, and I stopped by before checking in. Anthony sampled the honey while Clint and I tried out the honey wines. It was delicious, and I always love trying out local stores. Anthony has practice in wineries so he did really well. Especially because he was able to sample the honey.

We spent A LOT of time in the spa pool. Anthony loved it so much. It was warm and easy to float in. He did so much swimming, and loved playing with all his family.

We ate a lot of delicious food and drinks.

The gals got pedicures. We brought some Prairie Bee honey wine with us.

Pretty Feet

I went to visit my grandma’s bench with my mom and Anthony. She and my grandfather had a bench dedicated to them right in front of the library. It’s a beautiful spot, and I always want to go visit. My aunt Marilyn took me to see it years ago, and told me she felt closer to my grandmother when she sat there. I feel closer to both of them when I visit. My son and my mom came with me. We walked from the spa, and pulled Anthony through a lot of snow. It was worth it.

I am so lucky that I’m close to my family. It makes time away with them wonderful. We enjoy one another’s company. We laugh. We joke. We talk. Anthony loves them. Especially his Aunt Jo Jo. She’s first in his heart every time. She’s pretty great. I get it.

Not everybody is lucky enough to have stress free family time. Not everybody is lucky enough to be forced to slow down. It was a great weekend, and I am grateful we all were able to make it.
